Worship Like the Leper

How do you pray about your financial pain?

In Matthew chapter 8, Jesus came down from the mountainside with large crowds following him. A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” (Matthew 8:2) Now, try to picture that in your mind. Jesus is surrounded by a multitude of people. It’s noisy with the footsteps of hundreds walking and talking. Suddenly, a leper kneels before Him. Imagine the hush of the crowd – the open mouths. This outcast of society boldly approaches despite the risk of further rejection from others. He comes before the Lord in worship. Humbly, he kneels in a posture of faith, a position that could be very difficult and painful. Yet, the man trusts Jesus and bows in all his suffering, oblivious to the crowd, with a heart of worship. Then, he asks for healing.

When we pray, do we truly worship before asking Him to provide or heal our pain? Recognizing Him as the sovereign God of the universe is humbling. It changes the way we ask. In all things, He wants us to submit to His will, including our finances. Whether He grants or withholds financial requests, He knows what’s best for us. Sometimes we must suffer from mistakes we’ve made so we learn the importance of following His principles. Other times, He mercifully provides. If you’re suffering today, worship Him, admit your mistakes, and accept His forgiveness. Then, ask and move forward with a heart that’s submitted to His way of handling money.
