Where’s Your Hope?

Is money your hope and shield? Think again.

King Solomon, the richest man who ever lived said: Do not wear yourself out to get rich; do not trust your own cleverness. Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle.” (Proverbs 23: 4-5 ESV) God wants us to put our hope in Him – just like he wanted the Israelites to do with manna He provided in the wilderness. He wants us to trust in His provision and live with gratitude and generosity. Tithing teaches us to trust God that the remaining 90% is sufficient. Anything we trust besides God becomes an idol. Our job, our stock portfolio, our real estate holdings can all become idols. We focus on their current value and lose sleep when they’re threatened. There is absolutely no guarantee that we’ll have them tomorrow. Yet we know that eternity awaits us!

You see God’s love is guaranteed. Nothing can separate us from it. Because of this, we can put our hope in Him knowing that He will never leave us or forsake us. Jesus told us not to worry about this life, what we’ll eat, drink or wear. For life is worth more than food and the body more than clothes. Let’s put our hope in Him, our firm foundation. And remember Psalm 33:20-22: “Our soul waits for the Lord; he is our help and our shield. For our heart is glad in him, because we trust in his holy name. Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us, even as we hope in you.”
