When is the Right Time to Buy a House?

Emily and Matt are a sweet young couple. They both work full time and have been renting an apartment. But now some of their friends are buying their first homes and Emily and Matt want to join the club. But is it the right time?

Here’s what I would tell any young couple…

Don’t even look at houses until you have a 20% downpayment!

Understand all the hidden and true costs of buying a house, like closing costs, insurance, taxes, moving, and the things you will want to do to make the house special.

Also, understand the cost of maintenance, repairs, landscaping, and upkeep. Often closing day is the cheapest day of owning a house!

We’re just stewards for a short time here on earth. Don’t get in a long-term financial bind on a temporary home!
