What Is Good?

What does “good” mean to you?

God expects us to be good and faithful stewards. In the Parable of the Talents, the Lord commended the 5-talent and the 2-talent stewards as “good”. It’s easy to gloss over that word assuming we know what it means, but a close examination is needed to fully grasp what God expects of us. Good is the state of being morally excellent, pious, righteous, high quality, proper, honorable, and worthy. It’s first used in Genesis 1 when God created the heavens and the earth and declared it good. We’re created in the image of God and called to do what is good. 3rd John 11 says, “Beloved, do not imitate evil but imitate good. Whoever does good is from God; whoever does evil has not seen God.”

We can successfully manage money, yet miss the mark of doing that which is good. For example, a billionaire can give away his entire fortune and demonstrate incredible generosity, but if the causes that the money goes to advance that which is contrary to what’s morally excellent, honorable, or worthy – the gift is not for good, but for evil. We need to examine what we hope to accomplish as we steward what God gives us. Are we pursuing a career that advances good? Do we give to causes that bring good to others? Are we personally walking the walk and managing things in a way that God could say to you or me, “Well done my good and faithful servant. You’re being good with what I entrusted to your care.” Give that some thought.
