The ‘Keeping Up With’ Disease
Are you sick?
Many Christians are sick, but don’t know where they got infected or how to get well. In fact, some are in the final stages of their suffering. Crown’s late founder, Larry Burkett, called it the “Keeping Up With” disease. Now, do you worry or overwork because someone else is prospering and you’re not? Well, there’s a cure; it’s called patience. The prescription is faith, and it can be obtained from your Great Physician.
In trying to keep up with others, we suffer attacks of money shortages. Far too many believers suffer from a severe infection of impatience. Many simply cannot wait for God to act. They immediately apply a bandage by taking on a second mortgage, a second job, or falling for some get-rich-quick scheme. The Great Physician doesn’t administer human salve, because the answer to money problems isn’t more money. We wouldn’t give more sugar to a diabetic, would we? Of course not! Our Healer prescribes a double dose of patience, the very deficiency that brought about the “Keeping Up With” disease. Working more hours to meet higher financial demands may keep us from the Lord’s rest and cause fatigue. Families suffer, and productivity decreases. If we refuse His “treatment,” we will take our own medicine.
How can you avoid catching this dreaded disease? Well, limit contact with those who prevent you from being content with what you already have. Then, confess your envy and ask the Lord to “treat your heart.” Then, “Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him.” (Psalm 37:7)
