Testimony Tuesday – The Crow Reservation
Crown is helping Native Americans!
Many Native Americans face financial and economic hardships on the reservation. Conditions vary between tribes and locations, but there are some common trends. Poverty on reservations is higher than the national average. Reports show that more than 1/4th of the residents live below the federal poverty line. Unemployment in reservation communities tends to be higher than in the broader U.S. labor market. There are limited local industries and employment opportunities. Per capita income and household earnings on or near a reservation are generally lower than the national average. This contributes to economic insecurity. Geographic isolation, limited access to capital, and inadequate infrastructure are also challenges.
Thankfully, some reservations are showing economic progress with improved educational attainment and increased participation in tribal enterprises. That’s why I’m delighted about Crown’s partnership with Mountain Shadow Association. It’s been instrumental in fostering growth within the small community of Lodgegrass, Montana, located on the Crow Indian Reservation. Over several years, Crown has partnered with the community to offer career counseling and training in our Restoration Path and farming programs.
Now, my heritage is Cherokee Indian. My Grandmother was born on a reservation. Join us to help defeat poverty and unemployment, raise incomes, and remove barriers to economic growth.
