St Patrick’s Day

Wearing your green this Sunday? It’s St. Patrick’s Day!

Unfortunately, St. Patrick’s is now the 4th most popular drinking day, surpassed only by New Year’s Eve, Christmas and Independence Day.

Last year, WalletHub predicted the average St Patrick’s partier would spend $40, totaling nearly $6 billion!

152% more beer is sold this day than usual and 75% of fatal St. Patrick’s Day car crashes involve a driver who’s consumed twice the legal limit.

I wonder what St Patrick would think of all the revelry.

Around the year 405, 16-year-old Patrick was captured and sold into slavery. God used that time to prepare him for a life of meaning and purpose. For Patrick became a humble missionary who evangelized Ireland and impacted all of Europe.

He famously summarized his faith this way: Christ beside me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ within me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me.

The world will celebrate as it sees fit.

But, like the Apostle Paul, I pray that you will be filled with the knowledge of God’s will: in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy; giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

So Sunday, wear your green, forget the parties and remember St. Patrick’s zeal for Christ.
