Spending Reveals What We Value
What do you value?
Our spending reveals what we actually value. Since it all belongs to God, it also reveals what we believe about Him. That’s why it’s important to periodically review where our money is going. Start by recording every dollar you spend. If you’ve never created a budget, this is the first step in a plan for giving, saving, spending, and investing. Most people are shocked when they total their expenditures. One couple said they couldn’t believe how many hundreds of dollars they spent in coffee shops each month. Others value sporting events, but food, drinks, tickets, and transportation all add up. How about fashion, hobbies, pets, or more? Until you write it down, you’ll never know how your spending reflects your priorities.
Jesus wants to be number one in your life. That’s why He told us to “seek first HIS kingdom and HIS righteousness.” (Matthew 6:33) Others hoard money out of fear, and that’s dangerous, too. Jesus said, “Don’t store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:19-21) The balance is found in recognizing that we’re stewards of all God provides. When we put Him on the throne of our hearts, our values fall into place. This frees us to live the life He designed for us. For where our treasure is, there our heart will be also.
