Single Moms Need Community

Nearly one third of single moms live in poverty.

I highly respect moms who work hard to free themselves from government assistance and provide for their children. Single moms share common problems: limited resources, limited time, and limited community that they can trust. Some are rejected by their own family because they chose to have the child without marrying the father. A community can provide basic help, guidance, and a network of people with resources. It can be found in a good Church, a Bible study, or a volunteer organization of believers. A good community can provide encouragement, wise counsel, and accountability for sticking to a budget. When questions arise, someone can give answers: like how to buy or sell a car or house, how to draw up a will or handle tax and legal issues. They’ll help with moving, finding doctors, or employment.

Single mothers who can’t afford child care, repair and maintenance for a car or home, or helping a child with homework need the body of Christ. A company of Christian brothers and sisters can provide crisis management to desperate moms. We all benefit from living in community with others. Single moms need trusted people with whom they don’t have to worry about being judged. Online groups serve their purpose, but real people are essential. Finding a place to give and accept from others will grant them hope, encouragement and joy. So, welcome single moms into your community. In serving them, you serve Christ.
