Serve Him Only

Are you serving two masters?

If financial struggles are weighing heavily on you, consider the words of Jesus recorded in Matthew 6:24: “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”

Financial struggles are discouraging. Not only are our egos involved with our ability to provide, but our sense of security is also threatened. Quite often, the demonstration of our stewardship is not how much we give but how we react when there isn’t much to give. For many Christians, dependence on the Lord at any given time seems proportional to our material resources. Some find that in the midst of their most difficult times, their faith increases and matures. This is exactly what James 1:2-4 describes: “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”

Sometimes God allows financial challenges to reveal where our faith is placed. It happened to me. In the midst of my pain, God revealed my idolatry. Thankfully, He redeemed my life and worked my past financial mistakes together for good, and He can do the same for you! Ask Him to show you if you’re serving two masters so you can surrender fully to Him alone.
