Seek First
Is Christ really first?
In Matthew 6, Jesus told the crowds, “…do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
Now, that admonition is applicable today. We have a greater abundance available on a daily basis than all previous generations. Most of us have machines that reduce labor. Our children have access to food, clothing, and education. We have cultural attractions and entertainment galore. We have insurance plans, retirement plans, unemployment plans, even disability plans. Yet, many of us are so preoccupied with making and spending money that we’ve lost sight of heaven, the new earth, and a heart for the lost.
Many people claim to know the Lord, but they’ve made little idols, or gods, out of their material possessions. Our time, energy, and money are spent on the wrong things. How can hope be offered to the lost and hurting when we’re preoccupied with the pursuit of more stuff? When we’re consumed with accumulating things or hoarding assets, we fail to see that our priorities are out of order. Lord, help us to truly seek first your kingdom so things of this earth will grow strangely dim. Show us how to steward resources wisely. Make us attentive to the needs around us, bringing light to the blind and hope for the hopeless. Amen.
