Savings Day – Valentine’s Day

Happy Valentine’s Day!

3 books in the Bible record an event that demonstrated such love and sacrifice, that Judas, the disciple in charge of the moneybag, questioned the action. Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus, broke an alabaster jar of nard, poured it over Jesus’ head and feet and then wiped His feet with her hair. Nard is a powerful perfume from a plant grown in India, and it’s valued at more than a year’s wages. It was sealed in a jar that had to be broken in order to access the perfume. This possession may have been a family heirloom. Perhaps it was her dowry. In an act of extravagant devotion, Mary poured the perfume on the one who raised her brother from the dead. Jesus, the Resurrection and the Life, would soon shed His blood for the sins of the world. She gave her most valuable earthly possession and the scent of her sacrifice followed Him to the cross.

Jesus is the Provider of all that you and I have, and He’s blessed us beyond measure. Have you acknowledged that everything in the heavens and earth is His? How can you possibly express your extravagant devotion to His benevolence? What do you need to willingly give or dedicate in thanksgiving and praise? Perhaps you’ve not fully surrendered yourself to Him. How about your spouse or children? What about your career, your home, your cars or pets, your phone or computer? Write down all of your possessions on a sheet of paper and then acknowledge that God owns it all. Then give Him thanks for his great love!
