Savings Day – Saving for the Unexpected

It’s Build Your Savings Day!

Do you like surprises? Or, maybe should I say, are you ready for them? You know, those surprise expenses that catch you off-guard! They’re inevitable. Yet, 4 in 10 Americans cannot cover an unplanned $400 expense. That is why I stress the importance of an emergency fund. It’s only for true emergencies so debt can be avoided. Vacations and birthdays don’t count! It’s the buffer needed when layoffs, illness, divorce, or unexpected expenses arise. An emergency fund gives the flexibility to serve as needed.

To begin, automate your deposits into an interest-bearing savings account. Have your bank remove your ability to access it in order to avoid the temptation of spending it too quickly. Saving 3-6 months of your overhead is advised. Simply cut unnecessary expenses and exercise self-control. To get ahead you’ve got to use your head! Saving $20 a week will give you more than a thousand at the end of the year. $50 will give you almost three, and $100 every week more than five thousand dollars. Proverbs 6 says, “Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise. Without having any chief, officer, or ruler, she prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food in harvest.” If you prepare today, you’ll be ready for tomorrow!
