Savings Day – Prepare for the Unexpected

God cares about your finances!

Proverbs 21:20 says “The wise store up choice food and olive oil, but fools gulp theirs down”. God also commends the ant for storing up food during times of plenty. See, saving is an example of God’s grace in action. God wants us to save for the unexpected so we’ll have stability and margin, but we still have to look to Him for all of our needs. In Genesis 41, we read about Joseph saving 20 percent every year during the years of abundance. This sustained the nation during the years of famine. Have you had times of plenty and famine in your finances? It helps to have an emergency fund tucked away in a savings account when the hard times hit! If you don’t have an emergency fund then set a saving goal of three to six months of overhead. Ask God to help you. He’ll do His part but you have to do your part.

Now there are three full months left in 2021. How much would you like to save before year-end? Divide that number by three to see how much you need to aim for each month, and then post it where you’ll see it often! Only spend money on necessities. When tempted to spend, record your wants. You’ll be surprised at how those disappear with time. Now once savings grow, you’ll be motivated to work even harder. You’ll gain confidence and learn ways to save even more. Recruit family and friends to encourage you. Then, plan a simple celebration when you reach your goal! Life is unpredictable so plan for the possibility of emergencies.

Many couples are struggling with credit card debt and have no emergency fund. If that’s you, I recommend Christian Credit Counselors. They’ll create a debt management plan that works for you. For more information call the Crown Helpline: 800-722-1976 or visit online at crown.org/ccc.
