Savings Day – Don’t Presume on the Future

It’s Build Your Savings Day! Are you preparing for your future?

55% of current workers plan to stay on in retirement either full or part-time. However, we can’t presume how long we’ll be able to work, or if we’ll even be physically able to.

A survey of retirees showed that 15% of Americans will have nothing from pensions, savings or Social Security, and only 40% have Social Security income. Yet, on average, that covers less than half of pre-retirement income needs. Ideally, there should be multiple revenue streams.

Now, this is a serious dilemma. Learning to save is crucial. Begin with a plan that forecasts realistic expenses.

Cut spending by targeting the largest costs: housing, cars, and food. You may need to downsize, sell a vehicle, or change your social life. It will be well worth it!

Now income is important. Negotiate a raise, change jobs, or take on extra work. An example could be pet sitting or walking neighborhood dogs.

Pay down your debt, then save and invest. Don’t presume on future income!

In fact, James 4 warns us: “Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit’— yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil.” (James 4:13-16)

So Lord willing, your preparation now will have lasting effects.
