Savers – Faithful Stewards
Are you a saver?
Saving doesn’t represent a lack of faith. It actually reflects the heart of a faithful steward. Savers have resources to take care of our families and help others. Saving is money that’s not at risk of loss or penalty. Saving for the purpose of becoming self-reliant and taking life easy is wrong. That’s why I don’t think the amount you are saving should exceed what you’re giving except in certain situations. We must learn to balance saving as an opportunity to honor God and experience His blessings with gratitude.
Since no one knows the future, the only way to be prepared is to save during the good years. We do that by exercising self-control. Learning to save 5-10% of your gross income is a healthy start. “Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise. Without having any chief, officer, or ruler, she prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food in harvest.” (Proverbs 6:6-8) Financial margin is needed in order to give and save appropriately. Most people have to make lifestyle changes. Intentionally making sacrifices enables you to decrease expenses and control spending. As the writer of Hebrews said in chapter 13: “Keep your life free from the love of money, and be content with what you have, for God will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5)
An emergency fund can protect you when the unexpected hits. Start by saving $1000 in a “hands-off” account. Continue saving util you reach 3-6 months of your overhead. Then, set a goal to cover 15 months in savings. You can do it!
