Repurpose or Retire?

Do you plan to re-purpose or retire?

Years ago, a couple asked me for some financial advice. They wanted to prepare to repurpose their lives when they reached a certain age. Separately, both were inspired by a line from “Oceans” – the praise and worship song. “Lead me to faith without borders.” That phrase motivated each of them to ask the Lord what He would prefer that they do other than typical retirement. They had many friends in Florida who planned to relax, walk the beach, play golf, and enjoy their senior years, but not these two. They believed God was leading them on a different adventure.

Debt-free, with a modest pension and freedom gained by following Biblical financial principles, they followed the Lord’s leading. They eventually moved from Florida to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Locations were narrowed down to one of several in North Carolina or Georgia, but instead of simply picking a location convenient to the children, they began looking at a variety of ministries where they could plug in as full-time volunteers. By visiting these ministries and helping out for short stints, they sought clarity on where they could best serve. A particular one struck a chord in both of their hearts: helping children transition out of foster care to living on their own. After serving a number of weeks, God united their hearts around this mission. There, they could begin the adventure of fulfilling a new purpose for their lives…of living a faith without borders. Maybe you should consider re-purposing your Senior years and making a difference serving a greater cause than a life of leisure.
