Prepay Funerals
Have you considered your funeral costs?
Today’s topic is one most of us would rather ignore. The financial decisions around funerals can be uncomfortable. As a result, we avoid the discussion or we make emotional decisions without researching the long-term implications. For example, does it make sense to prepay for a funeral? In certain situations, I would say yes. The average funeral with burial can run well over $8,000, and that’s before the casket, cemetery plot, markers, service fees, and all the extras.
A prepaid plan can take the stress off family members, lock in at today’s prices, and even grant peace of mind. On the other hand, it’s not the right move for everyone. The question isn’t can you prepay, the question is should you, and before tying up your money with a certain provider, answer these questions:
• Do you have a fully funded emergency fund?
• Are you carrying high-interest debt?
• Can you easily get a refund if your plans change or the provider goes out of business?
• Have you shared your end-of-life wishes with your family?
Some prepaid plans are guaranteed; others are not. Some transfer easily; others don’t. Rather than locking into a contract, you can set aside funds in a savings account or payable-on-death account, which gives you control and flexibility. When it comes to funerals, be patient, wise, and prudent by prayerfully asking the right questions. Wise stewards plan for the future, even on financial matters we don’t like to think about.
