Parental Wisdom in Career Choices

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who’ll decide where to go…

This rhyme from Dr Seuss is a motivating reminder to choose the right path for our lives. BUT, I would suggest that it’s often PARENTS, not children, who are in the best position to give direction on educational and career goals.

If you’re a parent, seize the opportunity to give direction for your child’s future career as their interests and skills start to develop more. I’m not suggesting you force your child into one career path or another. But you can help them eliminate options that aren’t the right fit.

You know whether your child is mechanically inclined, outgoing, loves to serve, is skilled in leadership, and so on.

Communication is critical. Affirm your children’s efforts when you see Godly exercise of their talents and gifts. Children crave your approval and guidance in a world that offers more choices than ever.

Solomon said, “The purpose in a man’s heart is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out.”

With Godly wisdom that you provide to  help your child -contrary to Dr. Seuss.  They’re not on their own and they’ll know “where God wants them to go”.

Crown also has a fantastic resource that will equip you with biblically-grounded knowledge to help your child. Career Direct is an assessment that looks at personality, interests, skills, and values to give a comprehensive evaluation of what college major and career path would best suit your child. Not only can it save you money, it will save them so much time and stress, and keep them from wondering what their God-given purpose is.
