Observe, Assist Your Child in a Career Choice

Did you grow up with Dr. Seuss?

Dr Seuss’s book, Oh, the Places You’ll Go! says:

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes.

You can steer yourself any direction you choose.

You’re on your own. And you know what you know.

And YOU are the one who’ll decide where to go…”

Seuss’s rhyme is a motivating reminder to choose the right path for our lives, but may I boldly suggest that it’s often the parents, not children, who are in the best position to give direction on educational and career goals. Seize the opportunity to assist your child’s future career as you see their interest and skills begin to develop. I’m not suggesting that you force a child into one career path or another, but you can help them eliminate options that aren’t the right fit. You know whether your child is mechanically inclined, outgoing, skilled in leadership, and so on. So communicate what you observe in an encouraging and loving manner. This is critical when granting direction.

Affirm your child when you see them exercising their talents and gifts. Children crave our approval and guidance in a world that offers more and more choices than ever. Solomon said, “The purpose in a man’s heart is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out.” (Proverbs 20:5) Remember this and apply Godly wisdom to help your child. Contrary to Dr. Seuss, they’re not “on their own.”  With your love and affirmation, they’ll discover “where God wants them to go”. Abiding in Him, they will bear much fruit!
