Motivated to Work

What motivates you to get up and go to work each day

Do you have peace with what you do? Are you confident in your position? Do you struggle to answer these questions? In Christ, we have the unique advantage of knowing a certain future and the responsibility to orient our lives accordingly. Our job is simply an extension of our primary ministry: serving God. He creates and equips us for a place of his choosing, and we find fulfillment when we arrive there. Unfortunately, many people work for a paycheck and company benefits but nothing more. Others have even found ways to avoid working! Both are missing out on God’s perfect will for their lives. Those who fail to see work as service to Christ and the world miss the blessing that comes when passion and purpose are aligned.

Most people strive for more money thinking it will make them happier, more important, or content, but Solomon, the wisest man of the Bible, said, “He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves abundance with its income.” (Ecclesiastes 5:10) Regardless of the income, prestige, or security a job provides, unless it truly merges with God’s will, unrest will persist. The world stresses the pursuit of money, and all that can be done with it, but God calls us to much more. “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters…It is the Lord Christ you serve.” (Colossians 3:23-24)
