Listen Well
Are you a good listener?
Listening involves attentiveness. It requires us to open our hearts and minds to what someone is saying. It’s a discipline that prevents us from being distracted or uninterested. Listening to the Word of God is essential to learn, grow, and make wise decisions. In the Parable of the Sower, Jesus said that some seed falls on good soil. This represents those who believe and retain His Word, and through perseverance, produce fruit in their lives. Jesus followed the Parable with the admonition not to hide His light in a clay jar or put it under a bed. Rather, we’re to put it on a stand, to benefit others. We’re to listen, take His Word to heart, and apply it, thereby leading others to our source of true Light.
In Luke 8:18, Jesus said, “Therefore consider carefully how you listen. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they think they have will be taken from them.” Active listening to Scripture calls us into deep reflection. It provides a deeper understanding, comfort, and joy in whatever situations we face. It reveals our idolatry, greed, and insecurities. Ultimately, it leads to confession and repentance of our wrong beliefs and behaviors. This sets us free to live as Christ purposed. James, the brother of Christ, reminds us to be doers of the word, not hearers only. Listening and applying Biblical financial principles leads to a life of blessing, blessings for us and for others. So, learn to listen well!
