Letting Go of Sunk Costs
Are you living with financial regrets?
In 2 Chronicles 25, King Amaziah hired a hundred thousand soldiers from Israel to strengthen his army. Paying them 100 talents of silver seemed like a smart investment. After all, he needed every advantage he could get. Until a man of God told him: “The Lord is not with Israel. Do NOT let them go with you into battle.” Amaziah’s immediate concern was financial. “What about the money I’ve already spent?” Then he heard these powerful words: “The Lord can give you much more than that.”
How often do we face similar situations with our finances? We invest money, time, or resources into something, only to realize it isn’t God’s best for us. Yet we hesitate to change because of what we’ve already spent. We think we have to continue because we’ve put so much into it. Wise stewardship sometimes requires letting go. Amaziah learned that obedience is more valuable than recovering every dollar. Financial loss is preferable to spiritual compromise. When we trust God, we can release our grip on sunk costs and make decisions based on faithfulness rather than fear. The Lord who provides today is the same Lord who provided for Amaziah. He isn’t limited by what we’ve lost or misspent. Because ultimately, wise stewardship isn’t about protecting every dollar. It’s about following God, believing He can provide far more than anything we leave behind.
