Joy in Adversity

Have you ever lost money? How’d you feel?

I’ve counseled wounded, bitter people who’ve lost money and suffered downward adjustments to their lifestyles. Their reaction to loss of comfort and security revealed what they treasured.

Hebrews 10 reveals how early believers dealt with adversity:

You suffered along with those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions.

Our brothers and sisters joyfully accepted the seizure of their property because their real treasures were in Heaven. How would you respond?

Several close friends who are financial planners were mistreated by Christian clients during the recession. Some still suffer from the blame and unjust accusations over lost investments in the stock and real estate markets.

Their harsh reaction to loss revealed what these clients treasured. Jesus said, where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

We must constantly renew our minds and focus on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, because the treasures of this world are temporary.

If we’re truly in Christ, then let us put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in our hearts, to which indeed we were called in one body. And be thankful.

It’s how we can leave our loved ones a legacy of joy no matter how difficult our hardships.
