Honoring God from Your Wealth
God truly owns everything.
We brought nothing into the world, and we can’t take anything out of it either, but does your financial management reflect that truth? A Christian is in financial bondage if there’s no commitment to supporting God’s work. This principle is basic to a believer’s stewardship of money. Proverbs 3:9-10 says, “Honor the Lord from your wealth, and from the first of all your produce; so your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will overflow with new wine.”
It’s by honoring the Lord with the first part of our incomes that God can take control. He’s the rightful owner, and He’s entrusted to us the role of stewards. The money we give to His work acknowledges that fact. God wants us to give the first part to Him, but He also expects us to pay our creditors. This requires strategic planning and can be exciting as you trust God for creative ways to adjust your lifestyle. Budgeting is a necessary first step. Record every dollar you spend in order to stay on track. You’ll be surprised at the progress you can make in paying off your debt through diligent effort. You’ll also be surprised at the joy that comes through giving.
Getting your eyes off yourself and onto the needs of others gives meaning and purpose to life. Work as unto the Lord, and you’ll see Him provide in ways that allow you to share with others. Now, I’d rather give to God 10% first and ask for His help on the remainder than not have His help living on the 100%. It’s all His anyway.
