Giving – Required of All

What motivates your giving?

Most Christians serving God will never experience worldwide fame, become authors of best-selling books, or perform on stage before thousands. Regardless of the work to which we’re called, there’s hardly a follower of Christ who can’t give, and when done in love, it exemplifies the greatest sacrifice ever made for humanity: the death of Jesus on the cross. Jesus gave out of love when He laid aside His heavenly glory to come to earth. It was because of love that He became a servant and gave His life to save us from our sins. Plus, the Bible tells us God was motivated by love when He gave His only Son.

Dr. Charles Ryrie made a powerful statement about love and money. It lays bare the truth of our devotion. He said, “How we use our money demonstrates the reality of our love for God. In some ways, it proves our love more conclusively than depth of knowledge, length of prayers, or prominence of service. These things can be feigned, but the use of our possessions shows us up for what we actually are.”

Our checkbook or credit card statements reveal our love for God. We must ask ourselves if we’re honoring Him or ourselves in the way that we work, give, save, spend, and invest. Is our identity fully resting in Him, or are we still seeking it from the world? The root of our identity will influence where our trust lies. Stop, and remember all He’s done for you. Then give with a full heart!
