Giving – An Act of Worship

Do you see giving as worship?

Warren Wiersbe defined worship as “…the believer’s response of all that he is: mind, emotions, will, and body – to all that God is and says and does…It is a loving response that’s balanced by the fear of the Lord, and is a deepening response as the believer comes to know God better.” We were made to worship. The chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. Giving is one way we worship. It demonstrates gratitude, devotion, and reverence towards our holy God. Generous giving acknowledges our dependence on Him. It’s an obedient response that requires a sacrifice on our part.

Throughout the Bible we read of men and women who worshipped God through their gifts. In Chapter 12 of Mark’s gospel, we read how Jesus sat and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. “Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents. Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.” (Mark 12:41-44) Her worship through giving was recognized by Jesus and recorded for all time. It’s easy to give out of our abundance. It’s harder to give in our poverty unless it is done as worship.
