Give Generously

Are you a generous giver?

The Lord wants us to give generously. Listen to what the Scripture says:

• Psalm 37:21 – The wicked borrow and do not repay but the righteous give generously.”

• Proverbs 11:25 – A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.”

• 1 Timothy 6:18 – “Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.”

William Borden graduated with degrees from Yale and Princeton Seminary. He had every advantage the world could offer, but was guided by a personal prayer he carried in his pocket. “My Lord, enable me to conquer my will and overcome my desires. Not my will but Thine be done.” Rather than join the family business as expected, he followed God’s call to Cairo, Egypt, to serve the least. Refusing to be guided by the money he inherited, Borden put all of his wealth in a trust to be distributed after his death. He contracted spinal meningitis while serving in Cairo and died in 1913, at the age of only 25.

Borden’s Bible reflects his faith. In it, he wrote: “No reserves” – upon giving away his money. “No retreat” – upon contracting meningitis. And finally, “No regrets” – likely penned shortly before he passed away. Like Borden of Yale, may we come to understand what it means to be truly rich. May we choose to give generously, knowing we cannot lose the riches we have in Christ.
