Financial Protection for Cancelled Flights
Have you ever had a flight cancelled?
Flight cancellations are a real pain. Unfortunately, we’re seeing widespread airline disruptions this year. Jessica Puckett wrote an article explaining “How to Get Compensated for Flight Delays and Cancellations in the United States.” Her article says: “Being stuck at the airport when you’re supposed to be enjoying your destination is hard enough. Needing to then chase down your airline for compensation is like rubbing salt into an open wound.” Fortunately for travelers, the Department of Transportation enacted new laws in October 2024. They require any airline flying to, from, or within the US to give automatic refunds if passengers’ flights are canceled or significantly changed for any reason. Her article covers the federal rules on flight delay and cancellation compensation, including when you’re owed a refund, the proper protocols airlines should follow, and tips on solving common problems that might arise.
So let me summarize her advice. To get a refund, you must rebook the flight via the airline app or directly with an agent. Reject the option to rebook on an alternate flight, and turn down vouchers or other forms of compensation. Refuse the changed flight schedule. A refund covers fees paid for services like seat selection or WI-Fi that you don’t receive, as well as checked bags that are delayed. All important information!
