Financial Lessons From a Net of Fish – Part 1

Are you struggling to follow Biblical financial principles?

In Luke 5, Jesus told Simon Peter, “‘Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.’ Simon answered, ‘Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.’ When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.” (Luke 5:4-7)

Now there are a couple of financial lessons to be learned in this. First, though human reasoning seems logical, obedience leads to unexpected blessings. Peter was tired after working all night and catching nothing. It seemed like a waste of time and energy to try again. But out of respect, Peter did what Jesus said and experienced the largest catch of his life.

Secondly, God intimately knows our situation and lovingly asks us to trust Him. Peter’s obedience resulted in an abundant catch. Aligning our decisions and plans with God’s financial principles requires a step of faith. In the Old Testament book of Malachi, we read that Israel strayed from the Lord’s statutes. Speaking through the prophet, God told them to test Him in their giving. It required faith. Giving can be very uncomfortable, illogical, and even crazy at times, but can we trust the Lord? Of course we can! He can provide in ways we can’t even predict. Tune in tomorrow for more lessons from this passage.
