Don’t be deceived!

Joshua 7 reveals the destructive nature of greed and disobedience. After the victory at Jericho, God instructed Israel not to take any of the devoted things for themselves, but Achan saw a beautiful robe, silver, and gold. He coveted them, took them, and hid them beneath his tent. However, his disobedience was costly and didn’t remain secret for long. Achan’s action affected the entire nation. Israel suffered a shocking defeat at the battle of Ai, and 36 men were killed. There’s a financial lesson here for us.

Greed and coveting not only damage our wallets, but they also destroy our ability to faithfully steward what God has entrusted to our care. Coveting desires what belongs to someone else, and greed whispers to us, “Get more, more, more.” Both can lead to compromised integrity, broken trust, and devastating consequences. First Timothy 6:10 reminds us: “the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.” Money isn’t the problem. The problem is when it becomes more important to us than our relationship with God.

Faithful stewards understand that integrity is worth more than any financial gain. They refuse to sacrifice God’s blessing for a temporary profit. Achan exchanged God’s favor for a treasure, one he foolishly thought he could hide. Wise stewards do the opposite. They surrender temporary gain to receive eternal rewards.
