Do You Love Your Work

Do you love your work?

In 2016, Alice Graber, a 93-year-old South Dakota woman retired after more than seventy years working as a nurse. Her final 20 years were spent serving at a Mennonite home. She was described as a bubbly, energetic woman who walked to work in her 90’s – even if it was snowing! I appreciate Alice’s example of diligence and faithfulness! 72 years in the same career is an outstanding achievement – an indication that she was a remarkable person.

Proverbs 12:14 says, “From the fruit of their lips people are filled with good things, and the work of their hands brings them reward.” Can you imagine the rewards Nurse Alice received from serving patients during those 72 years? I hope you’re inspired to “work as unto the Lord”. Be diligent and faithful in whatever you’re called to do. Don’t grumble or complain that you “have to go to work”. Go with the motivation of making someone else’s life better.

In Genesis 2, “The Lord God took man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” God entrusted Adam with a job. We, too, have the Lord’s work to do. So, forget about your aches and pains, your problems and disappointments. Focus, instead, on helping make the day of a customer, a fellow employee, a boss, or a supplier. You’re an example – whether you realize it or not. So be a good one! A life of work and service to others is a life well lived.
