Do You Have Too Much Stuff?

Do you have too much stuff?

It’s easy to accumulate things. Sometimes we buy stuff just because we can, not because we really need it. John D. Rockefeller Sr, the early American billionaire, industrialist, and philanthropist, was an avid art collector. An unverified story goes that he saw a picture of a painting and instructed his professional agents to go and find it. He told them to acquire it at any cost. After an extensive search and significant effort, Rockefeller’s agents located the painting. They presented him with both good and bad news. The good news was that they located this rare artwork. The bad news was rather embarrassing. He already owned the painting and had it stored in one of his warehouses. He had forgotten about it amidst his vast collection.

The accumulation of things takes a toll on all of us. In addition to the stress of disorganization, or lack of storage space, things can distract us from fulfilling our life purpose. They can strain our relationships. Deeper still is when we try to find our identity in things. That can put a toll on finances and rob us of the true riches found in Christ. No matter how much or how little we have, we can’t take any of it with us. In 1 Timothy 6:7, Paul said, “For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either.” Our stuff won’t matter in eternity. What does matter is how we steward the time, money, and possessions that God has given us here.
