Discernment in the Age of #FinTok
Do you pray for financial discernment?
There’s a community on TikTok where financial advice and education is shared through short videos. The hashtags #FinTok and #PersonalFinance have billions of views, indicating a strong interest in financial topics. FinTok is especially popular with Gen Z and Millennials, who prefer this platform over traditional financial advisors. Content is designed to be both educational and entertaining. Different financial topics are addressed, and interaction is encouraged through comments, questions, and shared experiences.
It’s good to know that young people are interested in financial literacy. However, “viral” advice about money isn’t always reliable advice. Biblical wisdom has proven to be helpful and accurate for centuries. Online content can be misleading or based on personal experience, not expertise. We need the Holy Spirit to give us discernment.
Scam content is also on the rise. Some influencers promote expensive courses or products void of value. They flaunt their money, cars, and houses with a promise to help users become “financially free.” Yet, many of the accounts and lifestyles are completely bogus. Financial advice should be filtered through a Biblical lens to determine if it’s truly helpful or just a lie wrapped in clever marketing. Like Paul told the Philippians: “…this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ…” (Philippians 1:9-10)
