Crazy Money! Searching for a Bitcoin Hard Drive
It’s Crazy Money Day!
Do you own Bitcoin? Have you ever tried mining for it? In 2009, James Howells, a Welsh computer engineer, began mining Bitcoin. He stored the private keys on a hard drive. Several years later, while cleaning his office, he accidentally threw out the hard drive holding the key to his Bitcoin wallet. Back then, his 8,000 Bitcoins were a speculative asset worth around $8 million. Over the years, they soared in value, and Howells became desperate to recover that hard drive. It was buried under tons and tons of trash in the Newport, Wales, landfill. So, he researched and proposed an extensive process of high-tech recovery solutions. He devoted 11 years of his life trying to find a way to recover that hard drive. Howell’s digital treasure would eventually be valued at as much as $950 million! Some predict that by 2030, it will be worth $8 billion. That’s crazy!
A docuseries is being made that explains his high-tech plan and legal battles. It’s titled “The Buried Bitcoin: The Real-Life Treasure Hunt of James Howells.” This story highlights the risk of owning cryptocurrency. Howells was consumed with retrieving his fortune. Years of his life have been lost in fruitless effort. How many of us have wasted years of our life chasing after money and the things of this world? I did until God got hold of my heart in a Crown class and set me free.
