Crazy Money! Hikers Find Gold!

It’s Crazy Money Day!

A couple of tourists were hiking a mountainous region in the Czech Republic. They stumbled upon a couple of items protruding from the ground and took a closer look. An iron box contained snuff boxes, bracelets, and other gold items. A can held nearly 600 gold coins divided into groups and wrapped in black cloth. Experts dated the coins ranging from 1808 to 1915. Nazi Germany annexed this area in the 1930’s. When Jews and Czechs fled into the countryside, did they bury the valuables to escape the hands of their enemies? Or did Nazis hide the coins at the end of WWII? Who did the gold belong to?

The items are estimated to be worth more than $340,000. Czech law entitles finders to a reward of up to 10% of the value. So these hikers could profit $34,000, but let’s keep it all in perspective! In Psalm 19, David wrote: …The rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb. Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward.” Then in Psalm 119, we read: “The law of your mouth is better to me than thousands of gold and silver pieces…. I love your commandments above gold, above fine gold.” So, whether we find gold or buy it, remember it all belongs to the Lord. He alone is worthy of worship.
