Crazy Money! Grandma and Her Crock
It’s Crazy Money Day!
Colleen Williams, a reporter in Nebraska, tells the story of a 91-year old grandma and her 30-gallon crock. It stayed on her porch through Nebraska’s cold winters and hot summers for decades. She considered putting it in a garage sale until hearing about an auction for antique crocks. So, she called, and the auctioneer, Ken Bramer, came to check it out. He knew immediately that she had something special. The crock had rare, blue butterfly markings and two Red Wing stamps. Bramer asked her what she thought it might be worth. The grandma thought and said, “Maybe $100?”
The auction was held a few days later, but she couldn’t attend. It was her birthday. Besides, she was busy volunteering at church. When she learned that the crock sold for $32,000, she said it was one of the most exciting things to ever happen to her. It was definitely a sweet birthday surprise!
Proverbs 27 says, “Be sure you know the condition of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds; for riches do not endure forever…” Wise stewards keep watch over their investments. They adjust their portfolios as needed, so they’re prepared for the days to come. The Bible tells us to invest with patience and careful planning. Proverbs 21:5 says: “Steady plodding brings prosperity; hasty speculation brings poverty.” So, like grandma, take care of what you have and invest patiently and wisely in the year ahead!
