Crazy Money! Exchange Faux Riches for True Riches

It’s Crazy Money Day!

Jesus said to the church at Laodicea: Because you’re lukewarm – neither hot nor cold – I’m about to spit you out of my mouth. You say ‘I’m rich; I’ve acquired wealth and don’t need a thing.'” (Revelation 3:16-17) Well, that’s a big warning, and the problem is money. It’s not a sin to have money, but false conclusions about the purpose of money are very dangerous.

Because of their wealth, the Laodiceans believed they didn’t need anything, including God. Money became their source for success, security, and significance. The independent attitude caused them to lose their unique identification as the people of God. Operating at “room temperature”, they were neither colder nor hotter than the culture. They blended in with the world and grew completely indistinguishable from it. Worldly reliance upon money made them unsuitable for fulfilling God’s purposes.

The Bible repeatedly tells us to stop trusting in worldly wealth by seeking the riches of Christ. We’re to stop chasing faux riches and pursue the true ones. To obtain true riches, we’re called to deny ourselves and follow Christ. He wants us to place our hope and faith in Him, not in our job, our talents, our real estate, our net worth, or anything else. Christ, and Christ alone, is the path to true discipleship and lasting joy. He came that we might have life and have it abundantly! No matter how much wealth we have in this world, true riches come from abiding in him.
