Crazy Money – Chuck Feeney Gave It All Away

It’s Crazy Money Day!

A rich young ruler asked Jesus what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus told him, “Sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” (Luke 18:22) But he couldn’t do it. Could you?

Chuck Feeney did. The 89-year-old co-founder of the Duty-Free shops in airports amassed an $8 billion fortune. He lived frugally for decades so he could give away as much as possible. Now I don’t know if he’s a believer, but I do know he recently set aside just enough money to provide for himself and his wife, then donated all the rest. He lives in a modest apartment with few possessions. He doesn’t own a car or any luxuries. He wears a $15 watch. He has no need to impress anyone.

Feeney found joy helping others. Jesus intended that for us. He said, “It’s more blessed to give than to receive.” But our enemy robs us of experiencing that truth when we give in to the things of this world. We’re to trust God in every circumstance. If we believe that God really loves us and will give us only that amount of money that we can handle without worry, we can have perfect peace in our finances, but not until we’ve committed everything to Him.

Now money is a training ground where God develops our faithfulness. Giving here on earth is actually making deposits into a heavenly account – that “treasure in heaven” that Jesus referred to. Unfortunately, the rich young ruler missed out.

Now credit card debt can keep us from giving generously. If you’re struggling, I recommend Christian Credit Counselors. They can create a debt management plan just for you. For more information call the Crown Helpline: 800-722-1976 or visit online at crown.org/ccc.
