Crazy Money! Auction of a Yacht

It’s Crazy Money Day! 

According to Business Insider, the U.S. government just auctioned a Russian oligarch’s yacht. It was seized in Fiji in 2022 in a pressure campaign to end the war in Ukraine. The $325 million vessel, called the Amadea, was moved to San Diego and cost the government some $32 million in upkeep and transport. Monthly maintenance costs are over $740,000. That’s crazy!

Now, I don’t know who bought it or what they paid. However, I do know that it’s nothing compared to the riches we have in Christ. In Matthew 13, Jesus said, “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all that he had and bought that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.”

You see, treasure was often hidden in fields because formal banks did not exist. The first parable emphasizes the supreme value of the hidden treasure. It’s worth far more than any sacrifice made to acquire it. The second involved a merchant diligently seeking a pearl of great value. He, too, sacrificed all that he had so he could buy it. Thankfully, we don’t have to buy or earn our salvation. Christ paid that price for us, but do we treasure the riches we have in Christ? Or are we preoccupied with yachts and the things of this world?
