Crazy Money! $66 million SNAP Fraud

It’s Crazy Money Day!

A USDA employee and 5 others were arrested for participating in a $66 million food stamp scheme. The defendants are accused of “conspiracy to steal government funds and misappropriate U.S. Department of Agriculture benefits.” A network was created in 2019 that supplied unauthorized electronic benefit transfer (EBT) cards to stores across New York. They illegally processed more than $30 million in transactions. Now that’s crazy! Why would they steal from their employers and fellow Americans?

1 Timothy 6:9-10 tells us: “Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.”

Believers are called to live by God’s standards of honesty, even when it results in personal loss. Lying, stealing, cheating on taxes, or padding expense reports harms others. It abuses relationships with family, employers, governments, and the Lord. Jesus said: …if you’ve not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches?” (Luke 16:11)

Dishonesty can be tempting when facing financial hardship, but the consequences are severe. Let’s hold fast to God’s standards and trust Him in all circumstances. In this way, our light will shine in the darkness.
