Church Employee Stole Thousands of Dollars

It’s Crazy Money Day!

Did you hear about the woman in Indiana who stole nearly $600,000 from her workplace? Over a 13-year period, Marie Carson served at her parish church as a business manager. She processed checks received from parishioners, conducted financial business for the church and school, and was in charge of managing the parish’s finances. Marie is a senior citizen, and when she was on leave from her position, her temporary replacement noticed suspicious transfers to an external bank account. That discovery is just plain crazy! This long-time, trusted employee used a significant amount of church money for personal pleasure. She and her husband enjoyed casino gambling and spent annual month-long vacations in Florida. Oh, the irony!

In 1 Timothy 6, the Apostle Paul said, “…godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we’ll be content with that. Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.” Carson was sentenced to two years in federal prison. The US. District Court Judge ordered her to be supervised for another two years following her release from prison. Plus, she gets to pay the entire amount stolen in restitution.
