Bear One Another’s Burdens
We’re called to bear one another’s burdens.
The Apostle Paul wrote that we fulfill the law of Christ when we bear each other’s burdens. (Galatians 6:2) There will be times when Christians in need should approach their church family for financial assistance. That’s totally Biblical, and the precedent is seen clearly in Scripture. Although most churches can temporarily help a family with daily expenses, few are prepared to help with catastrophic bills. They just don’t have the resources. Now, we would have more available if the body of Christ obeyed God’s command of giving sacrificially. Many needs go unmet because we, God’s people, are mismanaging what God has provided by spending it all on our own desires.
Now, God has no shortage of funds in His economy. Rather, there’s a shortage of vision among His people today. In Haggai 1:4-6, the prophet had stern words for the people of Judah because they put their own selfish desires ahead of the work within God’s house. Those words present a challenge to the American church today. Ironically, by putting our own priorities first, we never have enough. Conversely, when we sacrificially obey God’s commands, He supernaturally multiplies our resources, providing nothing less than an abundance. It’s the story of the five loaves and the two fishes all over again. Now, that should not take us by surprise, since God told us that He would respond to our faith and obedience in this manner. Lord, show us how to help someone who’s in need, either through our church or personally.
