April Fool’s Day

Don’t get tricked this April Fool’s Day!

The Bible takes foolishness seriously. Proverbs 21:20 says, “Precious treasure and oil are in a wise man’s dwelling, but a fool devours all that he has.” In ancient times, every wise family kept a supply of olive oil in pots or jars. It was used as a commodity of trade or personal income, for food, medicine, and cosmetics. It was fuel for lamps, was combined with perfumes and used in offerings and rituals. An abundant supply of oil was a sign of stability, blessing, and prosperity. Like a savings account today, it was obtained and kept by prudent, frugal living. Not having oil was foolish because it was a necessity.

Today, many are living like fools of old who consumed all their oil. They fail to save for the future or prepare for emergencies. They live for today without thought of tomorrow, bringing stress upon themselves and their loved ones. A record number of people are months behind in car payments. Rather than saving, driving an older model, or shopping around to find the best rate, people are carelessly loading up on debt.

Often God wants us to wait for what we want, or think we need, so that we can see Him provide. If we go out and finance a new car, we miss the joy of seeing him provide a perfectly good used one or extend the life of the one we have. So don’t get ahead of Him. That’s a foolish way to miss out on blessings that He has for you!
