It’s Build Your Savings Day and Presidents Day!

President’s Day has  become a day to shop, but in March 1863, Lincoln proclaimed a fast saying:

“…We’ve been the recipients of the choicest bounties of Heaven. We’ve been preserved, these many years, in peace and prosperity. We’ve grown in numbers, wealth and power, as no other nation has ever grown, but we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace, and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us; and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own…”

God knew we’d easily forget. We’re told “remember” and “do not forget” throughout the Bible.

Moses reminded the Israelites to remember God’s mighty acts so that things would go well with them.

Joshua records seven stone memorials – reminders of God’s faithfulness and Israel’s duty to remember and obediently serve the Lord.  Psalm 77 says:

“I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your wonders of old. Psalm 77: 11-12

Remembrance prompts obedience and motivates worship and praise. Acknowledging that God provides prevents arrogance and breeds gratitude. Failing to recognize His generosity is dangerous.

Paul warned Timothy:As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy.” 1 Timothy 6:17
