Which Group to Support
by Larry Burkett

God doesn’t intend for every Christian to give to every need. Attempting to do so will quickly result in frustration and perhaps poverty. Therefore, we must be able to sort out those we are to help.

This doesn’t mean that the cause or the organization isn’t worthy—only that the need is meant for someone else to satisfy. There are some simple biblical principles to follow when you are considering giving to any cause.

Limit your giving to groups who are operating in the name of the Lord. Other organizations are serving the needs of the poor, sick, and elderly but make no pretense of doing it in the name of the Lord. It is abundantly clear throughout the Bible that gifts dedicated to God were to be distributed in His name.

Just because a group has an emotional presentation for a seemingly worthy cause doesn’t mean it automatically qualifies for support. Determine that the funds actually will be used for the purpose for which they were given. Be a good steward.

Organizations that have met needs in your life should be high on your support list.

Organizations that manage their funds wisely should be considered first. If you have a desire to support a particular type of ministry, locate the most efficient and productive one.

The most important principle of all: Allow God to direct your giving. Ask for His guidance and lean on His wisdom.
