“Not one of us lives for himself, and not one dies for himself; for if we live, we live for the Lord; therefore whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s.”

We Are the Lord’s
by Larry Burkett

I grew up in a non-Christian atmosphere. I never saw Christianity manifested in my parents, so I didn’t know anything about Christianity; nor did I have any interest in it.

My wife Judy was saved through door-to-door evangelism by Campus Crusade for Christ. In all honesty, at that time I thought, “That’s okay. If it helps her, it keeps her off my back and let’s me do what I want to do.”

A lot of people shared Christ with me after that; I was pulled into Christian circles because of Judy. It didn’t matter. I only wanted to have success, which to me meant buying the houses and cars I wanted.

Happiness doesn’t come from material things. So, I started attending a Bible study with Judy, but I went looking for error, not for truth. I argued every point that was made, until the teacher finally asked to meet with me privately. He asked me to do two things: “Read the Bible, ask God if it is the truth, and if it is accept it; if not, put it down because it isn’t for you. And two, don’t come back to my Bible study. You are a disruptive influence.”

Well, I picked up the Bible and read it with a different attitude and I accepted the Lord at age 32. My life changed from that moment. I became a different person, which is what the Lord asks of all of us.

What a joy it is to serve our God!

Father, am I the person You want me to be?
