The Law of Faith
by Larry Burkett

Prayer is probably one of the most talked about and least understood topics in the Bible. How does prayer really work? Many Christians say that they pray, but they seldom get an answer. Have you ever felt that way?

The reason prayer goes unanswered is because God answers prayer based on faith. Romans 3:27 tells us that faith is a law—just like gravity. You can’t jump off the top of a building and ignore the law of gravity without suffering a grave consequence.

However, many of us ignore the law of faith, expecting God to violate His own principle.

Since faith works by love (see 1 Corinthians 13:1-3), all prayers must be based on love.

Any time we pray, we should search our hearts for the true motives behind our requests. Are our prayers motivated by greed or by love? Without love, prayer will not be answered, because it is not according to faith. Faith works through love, which pleases God. He then rewards that faith.

How can you be sure your prayers are according to faith and will please God and evoke His response? Weigh your motives. Is the prayer for selfish benefit, or will it benefit someone else?

Look up James 4:3 and write it down. Continue to read it over until you know you have come to terms with what it says. What about your motives? God wants to give you His best, but you must follow the teaching in His Word.
