Pay Your Taxes
by Larry Burkett

Most Christians would consider themselves honest, and yet many violate the tax laws regularly. One of the most common examples is stay-at-moms who are operating a small business, such as a babysitting service or home product sales, but they are not declaring the income for tax purposes.

There is no question that our current tax laws punish married couples and, particularly, stay-at-home moms. For working mothers to have to pay upward of 40 percent of their earnings in taxes is unconscionable.

Moms who babysit at home have to cope with screaming kids to earn precious little income. Then they have to forfeit up to 40 percent of it to some bureaucrat in Washington, who promptly flushes it down the drain called “entitlements.”

Yes, it is a problem. But cheating is not the solution. We must get involved personally and do our best to change the system (not to mention the politicians).

God’s Word makes it clear that we are to pay taxes. Read today’s Scripture verse again.

Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me and know my anxious thoughts; and see ifthere be any hurtful way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way” (Psalm 139:23-24).
