Obsessed With Work
by Chuck Bentley

If God were to call you home today, would you leave with regrets? Would you have missed His best for your family, your career, and your life because you were too busy pursuing success?

Success is a good thing, but like everything else, it needs boundaries. When the pursuit of success dominates your life, you’ve allowed it to go too far.

Workaholics attempt to justify their behavior on the grounds of doing their best and providing for their families—even if it leaves them exhausted and their families frustrated.

But what would the outcome be if you allowed your family to vote on your work habits? Most spouses and children would vote for more time with you, not more success. Like every other believer, you’re God’s servant. And, when you’re bound by the pursuit of success, you can’t fulfill your function in God’s Kingdom. That function includes walking in a manner worthy of the Lord, pleasing Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work, increasing in the knowledge of God, and being a dedicated spouse and parent.

A workaholic lacks faith, and is often controlled by fear—especially fear of failure. If you truly believe that God is in control, you should be able to rest from your work and keep everything else in balance.
